NGAIRE.

(from our own correspondent.)

The Bettlers having failed to elect a Licensing Committee, the Governor was pleased to nominate Messrs. Oheyne, Cowen, Orowhurst, McKay, and Taylor to be a committee, and their first meeting was held on Saturday. Mr. Orowhurst was voted to the chair, and a discussion ensued as to the need of calling a poll of householders to decide whether any licenses shall be issued in the district. The committee had not a, copy of the Act to guide them, and thought that it was scarcely worth while to call a poll as there seemed no probability of any licenses being applied for, and they therefore determined to write to Mr. Trimble, informing him of what they had done, and asking him if it was compulsory on them to take the vote. The Aotjahowever, seems pretty decisive on the point ; it says the chairman shall appoint a day, etc., for that purpose, which does not appear to give much choice.

The Road Board met at an unusually early hour this morning — ten o'clock-— to try and square up matters, preparatory to handing over the reins of office. It is very creditable that settlers should sacrifice bo much time for what is unquestionably the good of their neighbors, quite as much as of themselves, and although an infusion of fresh blood is always valuable, there are men on the board this year who cannot be spared from it. About £2000 have passed through their hands in about twenty months, and difficulties have been neither few nor small. May 1.
