THE PATEA A TOTAL WRECK.
Efforts to launch the Patea were made on Saturday morning, but without success, and the evening tide and Sunday morning's tide had the effect of causing her to bump and injure herself very severely. To-day our correspondent wires that she is a total wreck. The Company abandoned her yesterday, and everything is now being taken out of her hold. Gapt. Bendall is directing operations on lehalf of the Underwriters. The steamer was insured for J2OOO.
The Press Association reports per telegram as follows :— Capt. Bendall arrived on Saturday with appliances, and attempted to get her off by the evening's tide, but she was hurled violently against the cliff, a quantity of which fell upon her, and the hull being stove in, she filled with water and sank. The water running out in the donkey-engine, there was a miraculous escape from an explosion. The Patea was insured for half her value, as follows -.—Union £1000, South British £1000, Colonial £500.
