SUDDEN DEATH AT ELTHAM.

A dreadfully sudden death occurred at Eltham on Friday afternoon, Mr. F. Parkes, of St. John's Hill, Wanganui, beiag the victim. Mr. Parkes purchased a section at Eltham at one of the Government land sales a few months since, and had lately come up from Wanganui for the purpose of assisting his son to commence work upon the land. He took ill on the journey up from Wanganui, and on arriving at Eltham on Friday by the morning train, was very unwell ; but towards evening he folt better, and had a shot at some pigeon.- At tea-time he suddenly became much worse, and on his son returning to the v/hare after seeing to hia horse, he found his father lyiug dead in the whare. Dr. Smith, of Hawera. was sent for, but of course could do nothing. The body was brought into Hawera by train on Saturday rooming, and forwarded on to Wauganui by express and train. Deceased bid, we believe, been under treatment by Dr. Earle, of Wanganui, for heart disease, and no

'doubt that gentleman would give the iiecesparv certificate.

From "the Chrouiole we learn tlmt Mr. Parkos was a comparatively young man, being only 49 years of ape at the time ot his death. He was one of Wanganui s oldest settlors, however, his father having brought his family to the colony some time in 1840, the deceased being then about seven years of age. Mr. Parkes had lived in Wanganui ever since, and during his residence here earned the esteem and respect of all with whom he came in oontact.
