NORMANBY.

(from otjr own correspondent.)

A poll was taken yesterday for members for the Town Board, and resulted as follows :— Messrs. C. Quin, 27 ; J. Treweek, junr., 20 ; W. Rowe, 19 ; C. E. Gibson, 19 ; and J. Millar, 19 ; having obtained the largest number of votes were declared duly elected. The remainder of the candidates obtained tbe number of votes placed against their respective names, i.e. Messrs. C. H. Beresford, 11; W. L. Gibßon, 11 ; W. L. England, 8 » and J. Wilson, 8. Saturday next will be the first meeting of the Board, when a Chairman will be eleoted, and other officers appointed. Messrs. Parris and Hadfield, representing the Royal Commission, stayed- here last night, and left for tbe Plains this morning. April 13.

In connection with the election, Mr. Quin during the course of the day lodged the following protest with the Eeturning Offioer :— " Sir, I beg to tender my written protest against your ruling in the Town Board election this day, viz., you rule that no one shall have a vote at this election except his name appear on the electoral roll of the district of Egmont, holding or occupying property in this district. You say that is the meaning of the 17th clause of the Town Districts Aot 1881. I beg to draw your attention to the words in that olanse, viz., ' The electoral roll for any Riding of the county within whioh district it is inolnded.* This does not mean the roll for Egmont. By your ruling you would exclude widows and all persons holding property in this district who had neglected to register their names on the roll for the House of Representatives. This is manifestly unfair to new settlers and widows whose names cannot be on ;the roll of the House of Representatives; therefore, I protest against your ruling in this case on their behalf in the interests of the publio." The Returning Officer gave the following reason for ruling as he did :— •• I applied to the Clerk of the Hawera County for a roll, and he supplied me with a roll of Hawera Road Board District. . This I did not, and do not, consider the roll of a riding of the Hawera county. I therefore took the eleotoral roll of Egmont as my guide." On the declaration ot the poll, Mr. Quin withdrew biß protest, he and his party having carried tbe election.
