NARROW ESCAPE OF THE S.S. TAIAROA.

♦ (PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) '', ' ' AUCKLAND, Yesterday. THe steamer Taiaroa arrived from Fiji at 6 a.in. She brings Fiji papers, which have accounts of the recent hurn'caue. The Taiarba during her 1 last passage from Auolfland to Levnka had a very rough time. The decks were continually swept by heavy seas, and at one time the , starboard rail was under water. Both passengers find crew' were at the pumps for Houitt, and that the steamer pulled through was almost a miracle. There is ■ evidence bn every hiuid conclusive as to thefactthat very wild work indeed had been going on during the hmricane. One boat ou the starboard side was orushecl up like an eggshell, and is now ' only, fit to be sold for fire-wood. Other boats are seriously injured. One of the boats on the port side was also badly damaged. Had any been wanted there was but one boat that could have floated. .A stout iron railing running , round the poop has been driven in and : twisted like wire on the tfeck of a soda- ■ "water bottle« , Through the rush of water "doors 'were J swept off the captain's and chief* , engineer's cabins. The whole vessel has a dilapidated and forlorn appearance, which sufficiently attests to • the, dagger she has passed through. r~
