Three hundred claims havo been lodged with tin- secretary of tho Royul Commission on Volunteers aud military laud claims. CITRISTCIIURCH, This Pay. Mr. Penfold has been appointed secretary uf the Canterbury Jockey Club. The trustees of St. haul's Presbyterian Church have been proceeded against for allowing a public performance in the building. Tho Mataura's freezing chamber waR opened yesterday aud eveiy thing was found in splendid order. Mr. Green with his two bwiss guides, and accompanied by Mr. Hodgkins, solicitor, of Dunedin, made an attempt to ascend Mount Earflslaw, at the head of Lako "Wakatipn, jeslerday, but the wenthex" was extremely bad, aud they weio unable to get up more than 4000 feet. Mr. Green, however, believes there will be no great difficulty in reaching the summit, but that is not to be accomplished by amateurs. He admires the Lake scenery, and lias no doubt that members of the Alpine Club will visit the Lakes next year.
