WELLINGTON, Yesterday.

Councillor Diver has given notice to move, That the Corporation advertise in the London Times and other papers for a contract to light the city by electricity for a term of five years.

The amount of Property Tax paid at the Wellington office, added to the sums advised as having been paid at the Post Offices, amounts to £55,000. The second instalment will be duo on the Ist March, after which day tho 10 per cent, penalty will be strictly enforced. It is believed that many people intend paying both instalments on Wednesday, and it is expected that there will be a rush on that day in the Post Offices at the larger towns.

Mr. B. G. Fountain, Under- Secretary for Justice, retired yesterday from the Civil Service, owing to reductions resulting from the reorganisation by which the Justice Department will in future be attached to the Colonial Secretary's Department.

Owing to the inclemency of the weather the Eacing Club races were postponed.

DUNEDIN, This Day.

The sale of the Otago runs was concluded yesterday. Out of 170 offered only three were passed in. The total amount realised by the sale was £08,854. The present rentals amount to £24,G59, and the total upset fixed was A'38,21G, so that the sale roust be looked upon as most satisfactory. Certainly it was altogether beyond anticipation.

ASHBURTON, This Day.

Mr. Wason's Eakaia and Ashburton committees have resolved unanimously not to support Mr. Saunders for Wakanui, and Mr. Wason is consulting with Mr. Sauuders as to standing again himself.
