CRICKET.

PATEA F. HAWERA.

The conquering- match of the season between HaWera and Patea came off on Saturday, and resulted iv a complete victory for Patea. There was nothing remarkable in the play on either side in the first innings, except that dissatisfaction wiu. felt with the decision of one of the umpires in respect to Beresford, Johnston, and Booth. "In Beresford's case, the umpire admitted an error and recalled the batsman. On the first innings Patea had an advantage of 2, the scores being Patea 51, Hawera 49. In the second innings of Patea three wickets fell for very few runs, but when Coutts and Reade became partners the runs came very fast, the bowling was knocked about considerably, and the fielding was very bad iv many cases. Coutts gave one or two chances which should have been taken, but Reade's innings was a display of really good cricket, not a single chance being giveu. His score was 70. Very few of the other members of the team distinguished themselves. Hawera innings commenced badly, Moore being ran out at once, and the wickets continued to fall, Beresford, Riddiford, and Wanklyn being the only ones who made any stand. The innings closed for 60, the Patea team thus being victorious by 98 runs. The cup presented to the highest scorer on Hawera side fell to Wanklyn. The following are the scores :—: — HAWERA.
