The Premier was waited on at Auckland by a • deputation, comprising Sir George Grey, Messrs. Sheehan, Harris, Tole, and Cadman, on Saturday, for the purpose of urging on him the desirability of deferring the re-leasing of the' Otago runs till after the meoting of Parliament, and, if necessary, the calling together of Parliament immediately. Mr. Hall promised to lay the matter before the Cabinet, and obtain for it every consideration, but expressed his own opinion that it was quite unnecessary. If the system had been objectrd to, there had been ample time during the past four years to have amendod it ; and even now the Government had the power of determining the leases and of giving a year's notice.

There was a narrow escape from a serious accident on Monday last near the Waingongoro bridge. Mr. Days' fivehorse timber waggon was coming down the hill on its way to Manaia, when, as tho driver was putting on the brake, the horses started off first, at a trot and then at a gallop; finding that the team was beyoiid his control, tho driver endeavored simply to steady them and steer them straight on to the bridge. This he fortunately succeeded in doing, but had hard work to prevent them rushing on one side of tho structure. No Booner were they on the bridgo than a grey mare in the lead 101 l and stopped the team, the only injury being some severe strains- and bruises sustained by 'the fallen one.
