PATEA.

(from our own correspondent.)

The cricket match between married and single of the Patea club came off on Saturday, and resulted in an easy victory for the married men by over 50 runs, they putting together 109, of which Jacob si ored 53, and the single 53, of which Coutts made 29. Only one innings was played. The committee met afterwards, and decided to challenge tbo Hawera and Manaia clubs, and New Plymouth and Tikoraugi, the latter to be played, if convenient, ou the Bth and 10th April. In a previous letter I mentioned that Mr. Ilurley was about to leave for Mauaia, to take charge of Mr. barker's business there, but I learn further that he is entering into partnership with Mr. Barker only in his Mauaia business, the Patea business remaining as at present Mr. llurloy has proved himself business, like since his stay with us, and we hope to hoar of the Mauaia business succeeding. Tho Borough Council met last evening to consider the question of a loan, and the following resolution was carried : — " That a sum of .£SOOO bo borrowed upon tho security of the rents from endowments, and such portiou of the rates as may bo necessary for tho repayment of the said loau, to b« expended as follows: 1. Formation of Bedford-street; 2. Drainngo; 8. Securiug a water supply; 4. Continuing formation of Egmont-street southwards ; 5. Widening Egmont-street to tho northern boundary, and planting Bedford-street." I believe the question is to bo submitted for the opinion of tho ratepayers at au early date. Tho Nye troupe will pay us a visit on Monday next.
