The Star. FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1882. NEWS AND NOTES.
Pressure on our space compels us to hold over leading and other matter. The ordinary weekly supplement is issued with this evening's edition. A company is about to be floated to construct a railway from the town of Wanganui to the Heads. The Yen. Archdeacon Inorpe will hold service, morning and evening, at the Anglican Church, Hawera, on Sunday. The building of Mr. Pulford's new hotel lias been commenced. Mr. Kirk's hotel will be commenced in a day or two. Mr. Mair, of the Hawera school, has been informed by the Inspector-General, of Schools that he has passed the recent examination in elementary science. Now that the holidays are over, the Drill-shed Committee think that it is time to make a move, and a meeting has accordingly been called for Monday next. There is to be a tea meeting at the Hawera Wesleyan Church on Tuesday in connection with the Trust Fund. Afterwards a public meeting will be held. Tenders for the erection of the Manaia Drill Shed have been called for. The plans and specifications are those prepared by Captain O'Brien, submitted to a meeting of volunteers at Manaia and approved of by them. The long-talked-of North Road, past the Normauby Railway Station was oommenced yet«terday morning by the Public Works DepsU-tmeut. There will be some heavy work required, -"and the job will coat a good round bum to complete.
It is stated that Mr. BalJnnce will petition against the return of Mr. Watt. A cricket match, second eleven Hawera club v. second elpv°n A.C.'s, Manaia, will be payed on me Jlavera grour.il tomorrow. Mr. F.aeman R. Jackson's sale is proceeding as we go to press. There is a good attendance, and we are informed tha- price are quite up to the average. We are requested to stat^ that at the Roman Catholic Churches on Sun Jay, Mass will be said at Manaia at 8.30 a.m.; and at Hawera at 11 a.m. We understand that the returns for capitation allowance, showing the number of inspection and troop parades made by the Waimate volunteers, are now being made up, and that the allowance will shortly be made. A correspondent wants to know " What is being done at Normanby about the Town Board petition ?" Very little is known to the public, perhaps the promoters are doing good by stealth. It is certain that the petition should bo forwarded at once, for there will be plenty of unavoidable delay, and the summer will have slipped away before any work can be done. The Defence Minister has granted a bonus of £3 per man to the Wanganui Volunteers who took part in the Panhaka affair. The Chronicle says the allowance is in lieu of a fret- kit, which was served out to all th.' other volunteers engaged ; and also in settlement of all claims ior wear and tear of uniform, &c. It appears that Government were unable to serve out the free kit to the Wanganui men from store, the supply being exhausted. The case Brett v. Young is not yet over. At Wanganui last week, legal objections were raised by Mr. Hutchison, on behalf of Mr. Young, to the proceedings at Hawera, one being that an exparte hearing shoi 1 ] r"t have been proceeded with until i .Miner seven days' notice had been given to Mr. Young. As Messrs. Jackson and Livingstone did not agree upon an award, the matter was passed over to Mr. D. Peate, referee, and we learn that there is to be a fresh hearing before him on the 16th instant, at Hawera. The West Coast Commissioner is at present in Patea. The Mail says: — Sir W. Fox and Mr. Parris will, in a day or two proceed northward, and complete the Crown-granting of Mokoia reserve (occupied by Mr. Lysaght), and the Kokotan reserve near the sea at Manutahi. The native block to be reserved between Oeo and Taungatara river will next be completed ; and the remaining land belonging the Government in that district can then be sold — probably 14,000 acres of excellent land. In Pharazyn's case, after a few minutes deliberation, the jury returned with the following special verdict: — "We find that Mr. Pharazyn, having voted at the election for Thorndon, did apply for a second votinn paper in the same electorate, but that the application was made under the impression that he was voting in a different electorate and for another candidate." The prisoner contended that this was a verdict of not guilty. The Judge, however, held that it was a verdict of guilty, and reserved the question for the Court of Appeal. The following items were accidentally omitted from our report of the Hawera Sports : — Putting the Stone — Mathsson, 1 ; Major, 2. Running High Jump — G. Bayly, 4ft. llm., 1 ; H.Bayly and Curtis, tie. Handicap 220 Yards — Major (scratch), 1 ; H. Bayly, 5 yards, 2. Hare and G. Bayly (scratch), also started. This was one of the finest races of the day, all the men leaving their marks at the same moment, Major running hard, caught Bayly in the straight, and reached the tape first by a couple of yards. Time — 25i>ecs. G. Bayly ran third. The steamer Lalla Rookh will leave Waitara to-morrow at 8.30 p.m. ior Mokau, i returning on Monday. This should be an excellent opportunity to anyone who may wish to see this grand country, which, according to Dr. Hector and a few others who have had the opportunity of seeing it, is a coal and gold-bearing country. The natives have made application to the Government to have their lands passed through the Lands Court ; and being very anxious to open up this country, have now consented to allow people to visit the settlement. It is said a company is now about to be organised to take up a large tract of land for coal purposes. The trip should be very interesting, and there should be some good sport. It has been suggested that some arrangement might be made whereby the English team of cricketers would meet a West Coast twenty-two, selected from players between New Plymouth and Wanganui. The only difficulty in the way would be local jealousies as to where the match should be played : "Wanganui men would scarcely go to New Plymouth, and no doubt there would be as firm a refusal on the other side. Now, would not Hawera suit all parties ? From a cricketer's point of view we are sure it would, simply because it is indisputably the best ground on the Coaßt. For gate money purposes it would not be so suitable, but that difficulty might be got over. We believe there would not be an insuperable difficulty in securing all the necessary funds by subscription, in which case, the groundmight be thrown open free to all-comers. If there were railway connection on the southern side of Hawera, as on the northern side, such an arrangement would obviously be advantageous, and it is not certain that it would not be advantageous under present circumstances. Try England's Normanby tea, at 2s. — Ad. Messrs R. H. Nolan and Co. sell general merchandise to-morrow. Mr. Murray Thomson sells timber at the railway station on Tuesday, 10th inst. Mr. Max. D. King announces marvellous bargains in the shilling window. Mr. M. J. Leahy makes a business announcement in another column. The Waimate Rifle Volunteers are ordered out for inspection on the 21st ; if wet, on the 28th. Tendors are invited for the erection of a two-storey house at Stratford. Hawera County Council invites tenders for right of collecting dog tax, also for the supply of dog collars. Hawera Town Board invites tenders for formation of portion of Albion-street. Tisch's hotel, Mangawbero, is offered for sale. Mri'W.' O'Brien, of Manaia, invites ten- ' decs for a' painting job at Otakeho.
