OPUNAKE.
OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) ' NEW YEAR'S DAY SPORTS. The largest gathering ever before witnessed in our township assembled on Monday last at annual sports; the weather being being most propitious for the occasion added considerably to the enjoyment. The A.C. band, under the able directorship of our friend, Mr. Dixon, was in itself a great treat. Colonel Roberts, Captain Morrison, and other members of the force have, for the kind assistance they accorded in endeavouring to make the event a 6uccess (which no doubt they have) are deserving the thanks of this community. But we must not forget onr painstaking committee, all of whom devoted considerable time, to their own personal inconvenience and sacrifice of enjoyment, in getting the sports up in the very limited rime at their disposal. So creditable a result is suggestive of the knowledge they possess of the work, which is indeed onerous.
