SPORTING.

PROPOSED NEW RACING CLUB.

To-morrow evening a meeting is to be held at Messrs. Nolan and Co.'s office, for the purpose of considering tlw advisableness of forming a racing club for this district. To sporting men, thd venture will at once commend itself, and if, as is the desire of the promoters, it is made not merely a Hawera, or a Noruiauby, or Mauaia affair, but a club representing the sportinsr element in the whole district from Waverloy to New Plymouth, there need be very little doubt about success. There are very many people who prefer horse racing above all other sports, and who would not take a holiday unless it was to see a race meeting. The support of this section of the community is assured, but there are others who look upon the race meeting as an excellent moans of giving an impetus to the breeding of good stock, and no doubt these will givo overy assistance iv their power. Theu, the district is a large one, though new it is rich, and therefore, once in operation, a racing club should have no difficulty in getting along well in financial matters. It should also be said that, owing to its position in connection with other districts, the very best horses would probably put in an appearance. If dates were judiciously arranged, tlio local meeting might come between the Turauaki and Wanganui meeting, in which case it is quite to bo oxpectod that owners of horses competing at Wanganui would iind it worth while to send their horses up the coast, instead of taking them home after the Wauganni meeting ; and provided there were lute handicaps, the weights being adjusted on the Wanganui running, excellent sport might be anticipated. A local lueeting would also serve to bring out district horses, and as wo havo a number of brood mures having conio of the host straius of blood in them, somollung good might bo oxpocted to eomo out of tho district one of those rtfiys. With rogard to the proposed mooting to bo hold next March, it is of soooudary importance, bat it should bo gono on with if tho club is formed, in order to let tho stowav.ls havo Boroothiug to do meanwhilo, and to give thoiu oxperionoe in management. The {>mes could not bo expected to bo large, >ut nevortholoHH a fow interesting events might bo got off.
