Knockdon is out of the celebrated i»are Princess. Princess by Emperor, out of the celebrated mare Kate, inlported by the late Mr. James Strachan. Princess took first prize in Timaru id 1874, against eleven brood mares. Em* peror gained three first and three second prizes, being beaten only by his sire, Napoleon. Knockdon's sire was bred by James. N. Fleming, Esq., of Knockdon, out^tf the renowned mare Rosie, by Prince Christian. Prince Christian wap/ also bred by Mr. Fleming ; was by hasj horse Prince Consort, out of his priae mare Nell. Rosie was also bred by Mr\ Flem* ing ; her sire was bred by Major Findlay, of Eastern Hill, out of a Highland and Agricultural Society's prize-winner. Her dam, Old Rosie, gained first prize as a. three-yeai'-oldat the Highland and Agricultural Society's Show at Dumfries, and as a brood mare the following yeir at Kelso. Rosie gained many prizes in / Scotland, amongst others, first, as a two» year-old at Ayr, 1867 ; first, as a three-year-old at Ayr, 1868 ; second, as a brood mare at Ayr and Maybole, 1869 ; and first as a brood mare at Ayr, in 1871 ; same day winning sweepstakes for best brood mare, open to Scotland. She wa3 beaten at Ayr and Maybole, in 1869, by Mr. Fleming's mare Salt, but was placed before the same mare in 1871. As a brood mare, Rosie has not been surpassed. Her first foal, a filly, was four times first as a yearling — viz., at Ayr, Glasgow, Maybole, and Highland and Agricultural Society's Show at Dumfries. ' In 1871, she was shown twelve times, and always gained the first place. These winnings included Glasgow, East Kilbride f> and Highland and Agricultural - Society's Show at Perth. In 1872, she was again first at Ayr. Her second foal, ateo a filly, gained second prize lat Ayr, and first at Glasgow, and Highland and Agri-cultui-al Society's Show at Perth, as a yearling, in 1871. In 1872, she was again . first at Ayr and Glasgow. At present, she is considered the oest of her age in Scotland. ?Her next foal was Knockdon. He was foaled on the 26th May, 1871, and gained the first prize at Ayr, and second at Glasgow, in 1872; and first at Timaru as a three-year old, in 1873; and first again in 1875, against all comers. Knockdon took first prise in Timaru as a yearling; first in Wanganui as a two-year-old; first in Wanganui as a three-year-old ; first in Waverley for ajl horses.
