A MEDICAL MAN FOR MANAIA.
Before the settlers dispersed, Mr. Days thought that some steps should be taken to secure the services of a medical man. He believed the district needed onej it was certainly large enough; and he thought that .£250 might be guaranteed to any competent person ; those guaranteeing the money to be allowed medical attendance and' medicine gratis. There WaS 110 (Jtmht r_flflfltfor ffi-gnrir? man, Mr. Bryant moved, and Mr. Days seconded, " That the requirements of the district being sufficient to offer a fair practice to a competent medical man, a canvass should be made to ascertain what subscriptions could be raised and guaranteed to secure the services of a resident doctor."
Mr. Parrington thought that it might be well to see whatjja good man would expect before mentioning any definite sum. He "would make inquiries while on a visit to Auckland in a few days' time.
Several of those present were of opinion it would be better to see what inducement could be held out by the district, before moving in the matter. If subscriptions were not freely promised, the settlers would have to take the chance of a doctor settling there to make a practice, which might happen any day. Ultimately it was agreed that those canvassing the town for signatures to the petition iv favor of constituting a town district at Manaia should also obtain promises of subscriptions towards a guarantee fund to a resident doctor. The meeting adjourned at 10.30.

The contractors for the New Plymouth water supply offer to finish the work three or six months before contract time, if the corporation will then take over the work and pay them. The offer is made, owing to the large sum of money that will be left in the council's hands, being 25 per cent, on the amount of contract, and deposit, which will be nearly £4700 altogether.
