The result of the polling for the County Council election is not very creditable to the public spirit of a considerable section ot the settlers here, or rather above this place, in the Ngaire district. Of all those in the Ngaire survey district,, excepting those within' the boundaries of the Hawera Road Board district, scarcely a man polled. It seems especially strange, too, considering that the question of forming the Boylan and Mountain reads was sufficient to induce a good many gentlemen up that way to vote for Mr. Hutchison iv preference to the Major, as he had premised to personally inspect those roav; i twice a year. Perhaps the Ngaire settles *' think that main roads are too insignificant a question for county councils, and f .o only fit for M.H.E.'s'to give their mi . ;. to. properties omitted, but in one case a property o£ several hundred acres does not appeftv on the voll, either in its present ov in any past holder's name. Ibis is hardly, justice to those gentlemen who have the ' misfortune to be on the rate-roll. A plentiful programme of amusement is provided for Boxing Day. In addition to the sports, there is to be a dance in the evening! so that people will be able to make as long a day of it a& they wisb. It is to be hoped, for everyone's sake, that the weather will be a little more settled by that time. December 21.
