The Hon. Mr. Bryce, Native and Defence Minister, is expected to arrive in Hawera by coach from Wanganui to-day. He will vistt Te Ngufcu-o-te-Mann probably this afternoon or to-morrow, but will push on to Parihaka immediately. Colonel Eoberts is here to meet birn.
The arbitration case, Brett v, Yoking, arising out of the coach accident at Manawapou about; twelve months ago, is to be heard in Hawera on "Wednesday nest. The arbitrator for Mr. Frank Brett is Mr. James Livingston, and Mr. F. It. Jnckf-on is Air. Andrew Young's arbitrator, Mr. D. Peat, we believe, being umpire. A )a,rge number of witnesses are to be examined.
Correspondence from Ngaire, report of rifle match between Manaia and Ouunake, (in which the former was victorious by 89 points,) and letters to the Editor, are unavoidably held over.
A six-roomed cottage owned by Lawrence Salmon, builder, Kakaramea, was accidentally burned down on Wednesday evening. The house was insured for £100 in the Union and £50 in the National ; furniture, MSO in the Notional. Nothing saved. '

A meeting to consider the question of forming a Town Board for Manaia, is to lie held" on Saturday evening next.

Mr. G. V. Bate's tender for rating the Hawera Itoad District was the only one received. The price given was .£25, ond the offer was accepted.
Mr. Pridham, of Wellington, has acaccepted the position of head master of New Plymouth High School, at a salary of £300 aud capitation allowance.
Applications for deferred payment land close at 4 p.m. to-day. There are a good many Rtrangers in town, and it is anticipated tliat there will be numerous applications. Contested applications are to be settled at auction on Friday.
The Taranaki Herald says :— lt is proposed to invite the public to subscribe for the purpose of presenting the Hon. Mr. Brvep, Native Minister, with an address and ji piece of plate in recognition of his valuable services.
At the Taranaki Education Board meeting, a letter was received from the chairman of the Stratford flchool committee, with reference to the erection of a new school buildiu" at Midhirst. The question was d fevred until the Board bad some knowledge of the state of tbe building faml. Mr. Bauchope gave notice of motion, " That the salaries of the teachers be restored to the amounts paid them before the reduction."
Plans of tbe Christchurch Exhibition Building show that it will be COO bOO ieefc over all, arronged in avenues of 45ft. width, something like a Maltese Cross. At each intersection will be a dome, five in all ; the space under the central oue being occupied by the band rotunda, and the others by fountains. All the space available for England, America, and the Continent will be fulh' occupied. About thirty applications have been, SO far, received irom New Zealand,
Unpleasant rumors have been circulating in Hawera, during the past clay or two, connected with the rather sudden death of a man. The allegations are to the effect he was, while ill, neglected, but the progress of the malady from which he suffered was such that death appeared inevitable, though not expected so 6oon. He died on Saturday, and was buried the same afternoon in a coffin made on the premises, no burial service being read at the grave. We are informed that Sir W. Fox has been written to on the subject, so that probably more will be heard of the matter.
At the cricket match ou Saturday, between tbe second eleven Hawera Club and an A.C. eleven from Manaia, the result was in favor of Hawera on tbe first innings. The Hawera team in their first ipnings made 75, of which G. Bayly COQtrihnied 14, Lysaghd 18, uud Jones 11. Iv j the Mannia first innings the score was 49, Captain Gudgeon with 19, being the only double figure man. In their second innings ihe Hawera team were all out for 46, Eiddiford's beiu# tbe only score worthy of mention, viz., 19. Rain prevented tbe Mauaia team having a second innings. Tbe opening of the new Catholic i Church at Patea yesterday, seems to have gone off most successfully. There was a large attendance, many being present from Wanganui, and places south of Patea, while from this end, Messrs. Flynn and Oakes ran conveyances down, which were well patronised, and many persons proceeded there in private buggies. The Wanganui choir took part in the service, so that the music was of a high order of merit. Bishop Redwood preached a most eloquent sermon, and took the opportunity of conßnvtulttting all concerned, in tue erootion of the new building. A collection was made, which will result in some .£l6O being added to the funds.
