THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The polling for the County Council elections on Friday, will be found in another column. So far as we can gather from tbe constitution of the new Council, the Act is not likely to be brought into force for the present at anyrate. An attempt will be made to govern by the Boad Boards permanently, public feeling generally being much in favor of that course, but should il become necessary to bring the Act into force to meet technical difficulties, every effort -will still be made to prevent the Council becoming an active governing road-making body. The only remarkable features of the elections were the determined manner in which the Normanby people voted exclusively for their candidates, and the expressed dissatisfaction at the Ngaire election, on account of fcbe polYmg-hooth appointed, viz : Messrs. Soothey and Willy's office, it being outside the riding. There is some talk of a petition being presented, but it is to be hoped that such a course will not be taken, unless it is tolerably certain that the electors' choice would have been different, Uttfl the poll-ing-place been elsewhere. To-day, there was an unusual occurrence in connection with the launching of a county. At noon, the time appointed for the first meeting of the Council there was only one member present, auother one turned up shortly afterwards, and then a meeting was held, &nd it VJ&S resolved to adjonm till a Sabure date.
