NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.

Titokowarn was brought up yesterday, .'on a charge of bavin" on 10th of November, 1881, at a certain place within the confiscated territory mentioned in the West Coast Settlement Act, 1880, to wit Parihaka, wilfully obstructed C. W. Hursthouse, and refused to leave there when requested to do so. Mr. Hursthonse deposed that Titokowaru was only a visitor to Parihaka, and had no land there. He "was called upon with others to return to his home, but refused to do so. On being arrested he said, " I thought it would come to this." E. Walter Gudgeon deposed to giving Titokowaru a copy of the Governor's Proclamation at Mauain, and corroborated the last witness with respect to the prisoner's arrest. Henry Charles Morrisou deposed that Titokowaru was very bounceable to Europeans. Prisoner was theu committed to take his trial at the next sitting of Supreme Court.

The Western Maori District returns are till in, with the following results ; — Te Wheoro, 991 ; Haniora Mangakahi, 223 ; Mita Karaka, 140; and William Hughes, 75, Some exciiement was caused in town to-day on a report being circulated that information had been laid against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn, M.L.C., for plural voting at the Thorudon election. Tbe information was laid by the returning officers, and it accuses Mr. Pharazyn of having voted at the two booths. This day the total quantity sold is 125,000 bales, of which 45,000 bales have been taken for export ; 10,000 bales have been held over for future disposal. Combing and scoured advanced Id. per lb. since the close of last sales, and for combing, washed, the market is firmer. The market for coarse cross-bi-eds, both washec2 an(3 scourei, is easier. The lambs market also raised. Tallow is in good demand ; best mutton worth £42, and best beef M 8 10a.

Sir George Grey sends the following telegram to Mr. Sheehan in reference to his defeat of Mr. Speight :— " When two friends engage in a contest, it is difficult to congratulate the victor as it appears a slur upon the conquered one, but I heartily congratulate you on getting a seat. Your absence from Parliament would have been a loss to the House &n& the country.— G. Grey."

AUCKLAND, Yesterday.

Mr. H. A. Mair, Government agent of the schooner Isabella, the mate, and two Fijiacs, were massacred at Santo, New Hebrides, on the l'ith ultimo, while recruiting for labor. Mr. Mair shot his assailant before he was overpowered. He was brother to Major Mair, of the Waikato.

The complete returns for the Tauranga electoral district give Captain Morris a majority of ten over Mr. G. Y. Stewart. DUNEDIN, This Day.

Mr. T. L. Shepherd, formerly M.H.R., now clerk of the court at Palmerston, has been suspended by Mr. Watt, R.M., for iiihuboidiuation, for taking possession without authority of tbe bailiff's office, and for frecjuetifr absence £rom duty. Mr. "Watt had to effect an entrance to the courthouse by a window during Shepherd's absence, and he removed Shepherd's personal belongings and furniture from the bailiffs office. The matter will be referred to the Minister of Justice.

At the official declaration at Dunedin West the following took place : — The Hon. Mr. Dick having returned thanks, Mr. Stewart said that be understood that the successful candidate had rendered himself liable to the penalties of the Corrupt Practices Act, whether by illegal or corrupt practice he could not say, and he (Mr. Stewart) would look into the matter aud reserve to himself the right of taking action, not for his own Bake, but for that of piu'ity at elections throughout the couutry. Mr. Dick emphatically denied that he had been guilty of any corrupt, practices, and demanded that Mr. Stewart should go further and formulate a charge. He further stated that he had seen something in fche Morning Herald on Saturday last on the same subject, but he would not say anything further respecting it until he saw whether Mr. Stewart took any action. If the matter were not brought up by Mr. Stewart, he would consider whether he should take proceedings for libel ugainst the newspaper. Win. Edwards, blacksmith, committed suicide at Clinton, last night, by hanging. He had been in low spirits for some time.

Mr. Hirst, the Ministerial candidate, has been returned for Wallace, having a majority of one over Mr. Daniel. A scrutiny of the roll showed that there had been four double votes, one triple vote, aad one ease of personating. TIMARU, This Day.

The half-yearly session of the Supreme Court opened yesterday, before Judge Johnston. The grand jury found true bills in every case bnt in that against John Tait, for arson. John Kobins pleaded guilty to forgery and uttering, and was sentenced to one month ; Andrew Taylor, stealing from the person, received two years; John Powell, larceny from dwelling, six years; Henry Whitcomb, larceny iroin person, four years ; and P. W. Dunn, larceny from ship Hotel, one year.
