NORMANBY.

(FROM OtJB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Preparations are being made for plenty of amusement on Boxing Day. Thy Athletic Spurts .Committe are slow in bringing out their programme not, it ia to ba hoped, on account of its length, for it seems a general opinion that too many events in one day are quite beyond the endurance of the average mortal. There is to be a dance in tbe evening, too, so that visitors will find no difficulty in putting in the whole of the day, and a considerable portion of fche night here. Unfortunately there is a good deal of sickness about, chiefly amongst the children, which will help to keep the old folk at home, and prevent their helping, though the weight of these little affairs should certainly fall on the single people, and we have a circle of old bachelors around here whose help at a dance would be eagerly sought and appreciated.

There seems to be considerable diversity of opinion regarding the advisability of bringing the Counties Act into force, and, unfortunately, there seems to be very fevr who have qualified themselves by obsevatioa of its working in other districts, to #ive an opinion which can carry weight. That the Patea County Council did not work well is hardly a sufficient reason for condemning the system altogether, and there seems to be so many reasons why it would be well, that it is to be hoped the new County Council will not decide on the matter without due consideration, and. will not allow that impalpable affair which stalks unheeded amongst ua here by the name of "drift of opinion," to influence .their conduct. The opinions that are worth paying any attention to don't drift much, as a general thing. Dec. 14, 1881.
