WANGANUI, This Day.

W. H. Watt, a candidate for the Wanganui seat, addressed a large meeting of electors last evening. A vote of confidence, and an amendment of no confidence, were proposed, the amendment being carried by 120 to 117.

CHRISTCHUECH, This Day.

R. Lockhead, the Premier's opponent for Selwyn, received a vote of thanks and confidence last night at Leeston.

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The natives at Alexandra have feasted the Waikatos who were expelled from P.irihaka, and who were sent back to Waikato.

Another boat accident has occurred at the Bay of Islands. The occupant, named H. Ritter, was saved by a whaleboat which happened to pass some time after the capsize, Ritter having held on to the bottom of the boat.

NELSON, This Day.

A friendly society's case was decided yesterday. A man named Harris injured his left hand bj' a gun accident, necessitating amputation of one finger, and was attended at the hospital. On being discharged, he went under the surgeon of Court Robin Hood (Foresters), who ultimately declared him off the funds, and sick pay was stopped. Harris brought an action against the Court to recover further sick pay, alleging that he could not follow his avocation as an engineer. The Court officers set up that Harris had been engaged as a dealer and agent, and that he was able to follow those or other light employments. The Resident Magistrate held that employment did not necessarily mean that employment to which the man had been brought up, and that plaintiff was shown to have been able to carry on the work of dealer from the time he was declared off the funds. Judgment was given for the deieudants with costs.

A private company has started a patent chicken incubator by hot water process, at Glemlermid, and the thing promises to be a gvenb success. It is claimed that 40 per cent more chickens can be successfully reared with it than by hens in the old fashioned method. A machine is now being made to fatten birds for market as is done in America and France.

A test case was heard yesterday against Watson, a publican, to settle whether under tbe new Act hotel* must be closed on Sundays. The facts as admitted by defendant were that the door -was open, that therj was access to the bar by that door, and that a person was behind the bar prepared to Berve. It was argued for the defence that the Act contemplated keeping open for sale to travellers, &c. Judgment will be #iven to-day. In respect to a number of prosecutions re Sunday trading, the City Bench to-day decided that the Licensing Act does not prohibit the keeping open of the door of an hotel, or access to bar, or retaining a person there to serve travellers.
