THE ELECTORAL ROLL.
There are complaints, especially on the Plains, that the names of a number oj people who should be on tbe Electoral ; Roll for Egmont are not to be found thereon, and some do not hesitate to say that claims which have been duly sent in have not been attended to. It may be, that during the transfer of the Registration office to Hawera, some claims were mislaid, but we cannot for a moment imagine tbat claims have been overlooked unless by accident. People whose names do not appear on the roll, cannot absolve themselves from blame. It has for weeks been opened for inspection, and due notice was given of that circumstance ; and if they did not take the trouble to see that their names were on, ibey have not much ground for complaint. At tbe same time, it ie very annoying ho a settler to fincl that he is not entitled to vote, although possessing ample qualifications, and if there has been carelessness on the part of any official, a repetition of it should be prevented. The matter wag referred to at Mr. Hutchison's meeting at Manaia on Saturday evening, and that gentleman promised to look into it. If there be any ground for complaint as against the office, it will probably have arisen either prior to, or during, the removal of head-quarters to Hawera, for from what we have seen of the working of the office here we believe it has been conducted with the greatest care and precision.
