(from our own correspondent.) Mr. Hutchison's speech in the Harmonic Hall on Tuesday, was a series of controversions of Major Atkinson's remarks at his meeting.^ He would not commit, himself with regard, to the Education question, but would wait for a time to see the views of the colony, but was in favor of inaugurating a commission of inquiry into the matter. He was asked the question, " Would he favor a scheme for harbor endowment for Patea?" He replied that he thought that the success of the works at the heads was sufficient guarantee that further expenditure would be necessary and efficacious, but would prefer awaiting Mr. Sherwood's scheme to raise the money without the aid of the <3?overauient." Mr. R. A. Adams proposed a vote of confidence, and Mr. H. Nicholson seconded. About 46 held up their hands for the motion, and 7 against. 150 at the least, refrained from voting. Mr. Lundon, Collector of Customs, held an. enquiry yesterday, into the stranding of the Meetwing on Thursday last, the result I have not learned. The annual installation of officers of the Patea Kilwinning Lodge, took place last evening, followed by a banquet. Brother Black, of New Plymouth, acting as installing officer. The s.s. Clyde arrived from Wanganui on Tuesday night. She left for Wanganui yesterday, at 2 p.m.
