LONDON, November 22.

The fourth series of wool sales opened to-day, with a good attendance of home and foreign buyers. The first catalogue comprised 4100 bales, for which there was animatedm ated bidding. Prices for scoured and cross-bred wools ruled Id. to l£d. higher than at the close of last sales. The present series of auctions will close on 10th December.

At the wool sale io-i&y, Ibe catalogue comprised 9800 bales. An animated demand was again experienced for the various lots offered.

Lord Cowper, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, made a speech at Belfast to-day, in which he took occasion to thank the landlords of Ireland for rallying to support the law. He added, that he feared the discontent and ill feeling of tenants were deep-rooted.

The appointment of Mr. W. J. Sewall, One of the Assistant- Secretaries of English Local Government Board to the Lieut.Governorship of this colony, in succcession to Sir Evelyn Wood is viewed with much disfavor through out Natal, and the Legislative Council at its sitting to-day, voted six instead of the usnal twelve months' supplies, as a protest against Mr. Sewall's appointment. MELBOURNE, Nov. 21. Information has been received that five Russian men-of-war will shortly visit the colonies. Two of the vessels are, it is stated, under orders to proceed direct to Auckland.

The cricket match between the English team and twenty-two of Maitland, New South Wales district, was concluded at that town to-day, and resulted in favor of the Englishmen.
