ELECTION NEWS.

Mr. Sheehan stands for the Thames. He approves native policy of Government, and will oppose separation. Mr. Alexander Fleming has announced himself for Auckland City West. Mr. Barstow declines to stand for Eden.

Sir G. Grey is going to stand for Auckland City East. Mr. J. S. McKenZ\e opposes Mr. De Zjatour for Mount Ida. Mr. J. Green is a candidate for Waikouaiti, in place of Mr. G. McLean, who retires from public life owing to illness.

The fight between Sir W. Fox and Mr. Stevens will be very severe ; the betting on the result is about even. It is more than probable that Mr. Ballance will walk over for Wanganui, Mr. Bryce for Waitotara, Mr. Walter Johnston for Manawatu, Mr. Hall for Selwyn, Mr. Rolleston for Avon, and Mr. Montgomery for Akaroa. The meeting to bring 1 forward a candidate in opposition to the Premier for Selwyn resulted in failure. Mr. Thomson, late SurveyorGeneral, is standing for a Southland constituency. Mr. J. O. Kichmond is opposing Mr. Shephard for Waimea. Messrs. Eyes and Connolly are. fighting hard at Picton. Mr. Ormond has not come out as leader of the Opposition; bis action nexb session will, he says, depend upon Ministers themselves. There are over 40 candidates for the Canterbury seats, although three or four are not to be contested.
