THE RIFLE MATCHES.
A series of rifle matches in connection with the Hawera Rifles was held. There were a good many competitors, and the shooting on the whole was very fair. The first prize in the first match fell to Corporal Jury, with a score o£ 28, Corporal Whittington taking second, with 27 points ; the ranges being 200 and 400 yards, 5 shots at each. The second match was at 300 and 400 yards, 5 shots at each range. Private Hicks took first prize, and Sergeant Trimble second. The third match was at 200 and 300 yards, 5 shots at each. Sergeant Trimble made 32 points, tho highest score of the day, but he had to concede 6 points by way of handicap to Private Kempthorne, who having made 28, consequently took first prize by two points, Sergeant Trimble coming second. A prize for the best aggregate fell to Corporal Jury. The nanies of the winners of the other prizes Will be published in the Star on Friday.
