Mr. Furlong having definitely announced his ma bility to accept the office of Mayor, wo understand Mr. Felix McGuire has cf msented to stand. The Hawerr, laght Horse turned out for a day's dri 11 this morning, a circumstance which i nduced some excited people to believe tha-^ the troop had been called out for the fr« mt. Enquiries are made as to when something is to be <lone to put in order the road betwo/jn and Normanby. Residents in the latter part of the district think it is v/orchy of a little attention at the hands 'ofthe Waiinate Boad Board. A special committee has been appointed by the Farmers' Alliance to prepare a Land Bill for England and Scotland. It was tlecicl ed to prepare a bill for England only at h" rst, and afterwards co make the necessarj - modifications to render it suitable to tf .cotland. A nur aber of persons in Hawera were made a little uneasy on Saturday evening by hear ing continuous and rather heavy firing i'u the direction of Normanby. Corn2>lamts are made that persons are in the babit of setting five to tlio bush near the roads around Normanby. The practice is very dangerous during dry weather, and settlers who are making clearings desire that travellers and others should be warned against such thoughtless action. It cannot be supposed that anyone would commit such an act wilfully, knowing what the result might be. Many of our readers will be glad to hear that a number of sheep trucks to carry double the usual number in two tiers have been provided on the New Plymouth line. These two-deckers have been much required, as hitherto it payed better to drive than to train sheep to Waitara. But the present system will reduce the cost of haulage to the department by nearly one half, and the rail will in conseqtience, be able to compete with the road very easily. Crash pens and leads to the ■ trucks should be provided, in order to encourage "so remunerative a traffic in sheep, as that which is now likely to ; spring up. r The trustees in the estate of Joseph Tingey, of Hawera, calls for tenders for ! the purchase of various assets. Every man may, if he chooses, become a moral hero ; he may, like a ' good soldier, organise a campaign against ?. passions that debase, and appetites that destroy. Freedom from- misery, from sickness, from perplexity, headache, and corroding care, is a condition of successful life, and this goal is within the reach 1 of all men. Strength of will is not P acquired by a single effort, bufc by de- v grees, by a process extending perhaps n through many years. If you desire wealth, your health you must study, S your passions control ; simple diet will do this. Lean upon the staff which will tl support you — viz., bread. Ask your storekeeper for tbe Ivioa Brand Baking Powder, and if he does not keep it, close ai your account and go elsewheie. Sharland has depots all through the country. J [Advt.] tc
