VOLTUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

[By Tele&rph.]

(from our own correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.

Great indignation was felt by the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers, and Inglewood Bush Corps, at the Government not accepting their services, although they were amongst the first who offered. Captain Ellis, of the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers, went yesterday to see Mr. Bryce, who acknowledged that some mistake had been made, and he said he did not know why they had not been gazetted. The force goes out on Thursday.

At the Hawera rifle corps drill on Friday evening, about fifty men turned up and went through a very satisfactory drill. It was announced that the following promotions and appointments had been made : — Lance-sergeant Ryan, to be sergeant; privates Jury and Whittiugton, to be corporals. A full parade of the corps is called for this evening, at 7.30; and advantage will be taken of the moonlight this week to push on skirmishing drill. Captain Bayly has sent to Wellington for serge uniforms, such as those worn by the A.C. Force, for the use of the Hawera Rifles.

At a meeting of the committee on Saturday evening, Lieutenant Watts, Sergeants Meredith und Trimble, and Volunteer Broadribb were appointed a sub-corninit-tee to arrange rifle matches in connection with the Hawera Rifles, for 9th Nov.

The jGovernnient will not accept the services of any more cavalry, having enough for present requirements. ITite Taranaki News thinks 'that the Government, instead of advising strange natives to leave Parihaka, should order th em to do so for their own safety.
