HAWERA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The committee met on Wednesday evening. Present — Rev. J. Torry (chairman), Messrs. Pitcher, Hobbs, and Symes.

A letter was read from the Secretary to the Board in reply to an inquiry from the Chairman of the Committee as to whether letters passing from the committee to the Board might be franked. The Secretary stated that, so far as he was aware, tbe Board bad no power to enable the committee to frank.

The Chairman remarked that he had made the inquiry because he had seen in tbe Stab that the New Plymouth Board had instructed the Opunake Committee to put no stamps on its letters to the Board, and he had thought what applied to one committee must also apply to others.

Correspondence between the Board and the Committee mta reference to ibe afltlition to the RchooT was veafl, Svom which it seemed tbat there was a difference of opinion between the two bodies as to the plan upon which the building should be erected. It was stated that the Boa rd's architect had visited Hawera, and would report to the Board on the subject.

It was resolved to bring under the notice of the Board the circumstance that Miss Cornfoot bad, for the convenience of the committee, taught three weeks in the school after her engagement had terminated, for which she had not been paid. Subscriptions from 47 families, representing 111 children, amounting to £5 55., towards the committee's funds, were handed in by Mr. Mair. The following accounts were passed -.—Star (advertising), 65. ; sundries, £1 os. 6d. The attention of the committee was drawn to the fact that many children of school age failed to attend school ; and it was resolved to write to the Board inquiring what steps should be taken to ensure attendance. The meeting then adjourned.
