MAJOR ATKINSON AND THE NATIVE DIFFICULTY.
TO THE EDITOR OV THE STAB. Sib,— There are two points in the hon. Major Atkinson's address to the electors of this district jworthy of notice. Ist. At the last eleotion, he stated that that the native difficulty must at once be dealt with, and for ever settled. In bis present address, he states that an end must be made to this standing threat to the peace of the colony. So that after the lapse of two years, during the whole of which time the Major has been in office, we have not passed beyond the stage of what must t>e done, and what we are going to do. -^ Publio opinion not only in this district, or on this coast, but throughout the colony, ie now so pronounced that any Minister who would not at once grapple "^-^wtthraad settle the difficulty, would be consigned by universal acclamation to oblivion, if not to a worse place. The Major, therefore, has for ever lost_ the opportunity of obtaining any credit in Buoh settlement, that action on bis part being deferred until made compulsory by the pressure of public opinion. 2nd. One can. scarcely help smiling at the manner in which* the Major takes credit for the progress of this district since he has represented it in Parliament, as if that progress were largely due to him, and not as it is, to the energy and enterprise of the people.— l am, &c., Charles Woolcook. Normanby, October 13th, 1881.
