HAWERA TOWN BOARD.

The ordinary meeting was held on Monday, the 3rd instant. Present — Messrs. Furlong (chairman), Bate, Eastwood, Pulford, and Winks.

The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed.

It was resolved that Mr. Ferguson's letter, asking that his lease be cancelled, be held over until next meeting.

Mr. Hellier asked for an extension of lease, promising certain improvements. The Board granted his application. It was resolved that the Working Committee should spend £20 on the cemetery, putting the fences, &c, in repair. Besolved that the clerk summons all defaulting ratepayers forthwith. Accounts passed for payment :—-Wanklyn, JlO 155. ; Hamilton, 65. ; Barleyman, £45. Mr. Foy's account for £50, second instalment of the £150, was presented for payment. Mr. Winks said that he should not agree to the passing of this account, as he considered it was a useless expenditure, and he doubted the legality of it. He did not know whether the work was done properly, and he thought no other member of the Board did.

Mr. Bate did not agree with the last speaker. The account was there, and it would have to be paid. He did not know whether the work was correct, but it would cost just as much again to have it proved. If it was not paid, the Board would be drawn into an action, and would have to pay it eventually with the costs. It was done by the late Board, and the Board has acknowledged its liability by paying the first instalment of .£SO. Mr. Winks — They have not done anything of the sort : it was paid by the late Board.

Mr. Bate said he thought it was paid by this Board; but in any case the amount would have to be paid, and ho would propose a resolution to that effect. Mr. Eastwood, in seconding the resolution, said that he was of the opinion it would have to be paid by the Board ; not that he thought the work dono was of the slightest use to the town, but the plans would look very well round the office. The Chairman would like to have the matter held over until next meeting, as he would like to know a little more about it. On the resolution being put, it was earned by a majority of one. The meeting then adjourned.
