ELECTION ITEMS.

Major Atkinson has intimated to some of the leading settlers that he hopes to be in the district and to meet the electors within about ten days or a fortnight. Electors would do well not to promise votes to any candidate until they have heard what each has to say for himself.

Mr. Hutchison will address the electors of Hawera .sui Thursday evening at eight o'clock in the Town Huff ~"Bod be inll speak at Manaia on Friday, and Opunake on Saturday. Mr. Sherwood has informed an interviewer that he will not oppose Major Atkinson on this occasion, but will support a " better man." The " better man," no doubt, is Mr. Hutchison. So much modesty on the part of Mr. Sherwood could scarcely have been expected. Mr. McDonald, member for the East Coast, has received a vote of confidence from the new Gisborne district. Captain Porter and Mr. C. H. Wilson are also mentioned as candidates.

Rumor says it is probable that Mr. Ballance will not have a walk over for Wanganui : that, on the contrary, a man will be brought out who will make a hard fight of it. No doubt, the wish is " father to the thought." The first speech of the electoral campaign is to be delivered to-morrow evening by Mr. Buckland, one of the candidates £or Franklya. Our Patea correspondent writes : — " Mr. G. Hutchison has been up for the last few days, feeling his way as to his prospects of election for the Hawera district ; but it will, no doubt, take a strong man to overthrow the Major, although we have grievous cause for complaint against him down here."

Mr. James Crawford, who lately sold out his farm on the Waimate Plains, is now a candidate for the South Franklin Electoral District. He is still a member of the Waimate Road Board, and has proved himself an active, energetic, and sensible member of the same. He served the men of Franklin in the Auckland Provincial Council, and was regarded as a good and careful representative. The Otago Daily Times states that Mr. Robert Stout has no intention of seeking election to the House of Representatives.

The Dunedin Morning Herald says it has authority for stating that the elections will not take place till January.

It is feared that owing to some confusion at present existing and the shortness of tune given for the preparation of the electoral rolls, a good many persons on the edge of the boundaries between Auckland City West and Auckland City North will be disfranchised at the next election.

Mr. Trimble, registrar of electors, has received the necessary papers from New Plymouth, and the work of compiling the new electoral roll will be proceeded with at once. As there is very little time given for the completion of the roll, persons entitled to vote would do well to send in then: claims at once.
