PUBLIC MEETING, NORMANBY.

A meeting of persons interested in the road deviation at Normanby was held last Saturday evening, to consider the proposal made by the Government in reference to the matter which had been referred to them by the deputation. The meeting was called for 7 p.m., but it was past 8 o'clock before even a few of those concerned put in an appearance. On the motion of Mr. Beresford, seconded by Mr. Gibson, Mr. Gray took the chair.

The Chairman read the letter already published in the Stab, stating that the road asked for would be made on the understanding that it would be a full settlement of all claims for compensation. Mr. Beresford moved that the road proposed by the Government in the foregoing letter be accepted as a final settlement of all claims against the Government for compensation for loss of road. Seconded by Mr. Gibson and carried. It was recognised by the meeting that Mr. F. H. Brett was not at all likely to withdraw his claims, which were of a complicated nature, involving far more than any mere loss of road. Land of his had been taken for railway purposes, and it was exceedingly unlikely that he would prejudice his claims by agreeing to the proposal made by the Government. After discussion, it was resolved that Messrs. Gray and Beresford obtain the signatures of all the original petitioners to the above resolution, before forwarding tbe same to the Government.

Mr. Yorke pointed out that as the Road Board bad met on that day, it was necessary that they should hold a special meeting to consider the letter and proposal of the Government. So that if the latter were not satisfied, then those wishing for compensation should not be debarred by effluxion of time from claiming it. It was agreed that the Road Board should be requested to bold a special meeting as soon as possible after the signatures referred to above had been canvassed for, so that in the event of the conditions required by the Government not being generally acceded to, the petitioners should not prejudice their claims by further delays. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the proceedings. Tbe meeting adjourned about 8.45.
