WAIMATE VALUATION.
Our Patea contemporary says, in respect to the Waimate valuation roll, that it appears that both the County Council and the Road Board are proceeding irrespective of each other to prepare a valuation roll. It is just possible that this may be so, but it is very unlikely. The Road Board, at its meeting on the 23rd July, passed the following resolution :—: — " That, subject to the time for preparing a valuation roll by the Road Board being extended by Order in Council, as requested by the Board, Mr. Bate's tender at £20 be accepted." The County Council ought -to have had their roll made on the 15th January, and open for inspection up to the 15th February. Up to the Ist August they had not obtained a valid roll. As the Rating Act gives power to the Governor in Council to provide for any such errors or omissions by Order in Council, the Road Board proposed to undertake the duty, for fear that the County Council should fail to provide a roll, there being a doubt about Mr. Bate's valuation being accepted. It is very unlikely that the Colonial Secretary would grant extension of time both to the County Council and to the Road Board. If the application of the former is granted, the Road Board have power, under the Rating Act Amendment Act, to adopt their roll, and thus save £20. So long as a valid roll is prepared without delay, it does not matter much which body prepares it.
