FOOTBALL.

PATEA V. HAWERA.

This return match was played on the Hawera Cricket Ground on Saturday last, resulting in a drawn game. The visitors played one man short, and without a doubt played hard and well to avoid defeat; and the Hawera team were individually a much heavier and stronger team. The following are the names of the respective teams: — Patea: Gibbons, Coutts (captain), Dasent (2), Kitchen (2), Powell, Pearce, Heenan, Williams, Carey, Byrne, Hyams, and Brown. Hawera : Bayly G. (captain), Bayly, H., Baddeley, Broadbent, Bleasel, Adamson, W., Lucas, Lysaght, Mason, Skeet, Budge, Willy (2), White, and Witney. It was agreed between the captains that only goals and touch downs would count, and as neither side obtained the one or the other, the game was drawn. For Patea, the play of Gibbons was really good, he never missing an opportunity of doing good for his side, and particularly excelling in collaring. Coutts also did well, aud picked up the ball aud returned it very dexterously. Heenan, as half-back, played a good honest game. The forwards worked well, but one or two of them seemed to ignore their umpire's reprimanding them, as to throwing themselves on the ball in the scrimmages, which is unfair, vide section 14 in the Rugby Union rules. For Hawera, the play of the captain (G. Bayly) was everything that a football critic could desire, he making iv the last twenty minutes a splendid run, being the only run made during the game, and was only collared a few yards from the goal line. Baddeley played a hard and good game throughout, as did Willy, as quarter-back, and F. Bayly, who by his play in this match, promises to turn out a good footballer. Lucas, Skeet, and Adamsou, W., as forward, played well throughout. That Hawera should have won, every spectator concedes; and the query is, why they did not. Well, we beg to suggest that in future, before playing, they endeavor to have just one or two practices. This match will virtually end the football season for Hawera, unless they proceed to Manaia to play the return match against tbe Manaia team, or arrange a match with New Plymouth.
