THE RAILWAY OPENING CELEBEATION.
On Wednesday next, it is proposed to hold a meeting of the Bailway Opening Celebration Committee. To that meeting will be submitted the report and proposals of the New Plymouth Committee, which has been appointed at a public meeting similar to that held in Hawera. All the speakers in New Plymouth seemed to be in favor of sharing the celebration, and of having a ball at their town, and a luncheon at Hawera. It will be remembered that this proposal was mentioned in Hawera, but met with little or no support; the feeling here being strongly in favor of undertaking the whole entertainment in this town. It is unquestionably the more usual course to pursue. The opening of the railway at New Plymouth was probably celebrated when the first section of the line was opened, and the people there may be held to have had their " spree " on the occasion. At Hawera the opening of the line will be a new thing. It will be such a vast improvement on the Mountain road, that Hawera people trading or travelling between the two places must rejoice, and would naturally invite their friends at New Plj'mouth to rejoice with them. The first question to be considered in a case of this sort is whether there is so much to be gained by a departure from the usual course as to justify it. The worst thing which could happen to either set of celebrationists would be to issue invitations and not have them accepted.
