WELLINGTON, Last Night.
The case of Alexander Brogden, Henry Brogden, and James Brogden, suppliants, against her Majesty the Queen, respondent, came before Mr. Justice Eichmond in Chambers this morning. The suppliants appeared to show cause why all proceedings in this action should not be stayed, on the grounds mainly that tho claims in the petition were disputed within clause 32 of the general conditions of the contract set out in the several counts, and that such claims ought to be submitted to arbitration in the manner directed by the Government Contractors Arbitration Act, 1872. After hearing the evidence, his Honor reserved judgment.

It is stated here that Mr. Buchanan, who has taken such a prominent part in forming a company for exporting frozen meat from Wellington, will be a candidate for Parliamentary honors at the next general election. AUCKLAND, Last Night.

CHEISTCHUECH, Last Night. At the inquest on Jeffery Williams, who hung himself in a blacksmith's shop yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity.
The Hunt Club Steeplechase took place to-day. Fine weather prevailed, and there was a fair attendance. Hunt Club Cup— Fakir, 1; Winfield, 2; Flora', 8. Gone Away Stakes— Agent, 1 ; Quamby, 2; Clarence, 8. Tally-ho Handicap — Winfield", 1; Forsaken, 2; Lucy, 8. About one o'clock, Bay's (the, jockey) residence took fire, but it was quiokly suppressed.
DUNEDIN, Last Night.
At Waikouaiti a girl named Afleck was literally roasted to death through her clothes catching fire.
INVEECAEGILL, Last Night.
A young man named Smith, aged 22 years, employed on the railway, while out shooting a few days ago,. had his thumb blown off, -and the contents of the charge and a portion of the thumb were lodged in the shoulder. He lingered till yesterday, when he "died, mortification having set in.
