OPUNAKE.
(from our own correspondent.)
Opunake, July 19.
At the Parihaka meeting on Sunday, Honi Pihama's wife, on entering the village, held up on a supplejack £200 as a present for Te Whiti. The prophet, in addressing the people, enjoined tbem not to interfere with the Constabulary by pulling down the fence, as hostilities had passed. The Tui, with fifty tons of cargo for here and Manaia, arrived on Sunday. , Several other steamers within the last week have called here, and several others are ' daily expected — all with cargo for Opunake and the Plains. At about 8 p.m. last evening the Telegraph Hotel caught fire, and were it not for the prompt aid rendered, which fortunately was at hand, the premises would have been totally destroyed. The house •has suffered partial damage, which in my next I will detail. No little credit is due to Messrs. Middleton Brothers for the very cool and collected way they worked in getting the fire under.
