OPUNAKE.

{FROM OT7K OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Opunake, July 14. The Clyde, with timber for the new hotel, arrived late last evening, and this morning it was found she had discharged and cleared, not, however, as was expected, to the satisfaction of the contractor, Mr. Cruickshanks, a good portion of the timber lying for a considerable distance on the beach towards Mataka, and having sustained a little injury. This necessitates extra expense in collecting it, plus the delay, which is considered due to neglect on the part of the steamer. This is an instance of the great importance of having a suitable boating service for the port. Had one been established, the timber in question would have been landed last evening, and the loss avoided. The football match played last Saturday at Rahotu, Opunake v. Rahotu, resulted in an easy victory for the latter. On Monday last the Opunake A.C. station was augmented by a detachment of twenty men from Manaia, who are employed in the formation of the new road to the beach.

Some natives here, including "Wiremu Kingi, are about getting up a petition for the House, praying Major Atkinson's Bill, re taxing their lands, will not pass. I hear that Mr. McVicar, of New Plymouth, is about starting a flour mill at Te Nainu, the site of the old flax mill.

Several town sections have recently changed bands here, realising iv every instance more than double the price given at auction.
