WELLINGTON, Last Night.
A warm discussion took place at tbe meeting of tbe City Council over the Te Aro reclamation, and one set of Councillors challenged the others to resign, and test the question at issue by a general election.
DUNEDIN, Last Night.
Mr. J. Bathgate, formerly Minister of Justice, is likely to become a candidate for Dunedin at the next general election.
At the meeting of the Waimea Plains Railway Company, Mr. Larnach, the chairman, said he fully expected the line to pay 9 or 10 per cent, in the course of a year or so.
NAPIER, Last Night. A native squabble about a disputed boundary occurred at Oinahau on Saturday. Donnelly's people had been driving some sheep on a piece of ground claimed by Rerata Kawepo, and the result was that Eerata's party killed 280 sheep belonging to Mrs. Donnelly's mother and other natives.
OAMARU, Last Night.
Mr. Jones, M.H.R., addressed his constituents last night. The meeting was orderly, and at its conclusion Mr. Jones wrs accorded a vote of confidence.
TAURANGA, Last Night.
An inquest regarding the recent disastrous fire was held yesterday, before Capt. Tovey and a jury. Lee and a number of other witnesses were examined, but no further particulars were elicited. A verdict to the effect that the cause of the fire was unknown was returned.
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.
Cecil Gurney was fined £10 and costs, yesterday, for acting as a conveyancer when not a barrister of the Supreme Court. The defence was that he was merely acting as clerk to a solicitor. The Law Society prosecuted.
J. A. Morgan, starch and farine manufacturer, has applied for a whisky distilling license, offering to pay Government the same duty as is charged on the imported article. Morgan writes to the Commissioner of Customs: "If you cannot grant the license under existing laws, will you be good enough to bring the matter ■under the notice of the Government?"
GREYMOUTH, Last Night.
' Mr. T. S. Weston addressed a crowded meeting last night, the Mayor being in the chair. He received an enthusiastic reception, and a vote of confidence in him was unanimously carried.
NELSON, Last Night.
The election for Nelson City took place to-day, and resulted in Mr. Levestan being returned by a majority of 31. Mr. Levestan, 438 ; Mr. Richmond, 407. AUCKLAND, Last Night.
Arrived— Flirt, from Friendly Islands.
At. a preliminary meeting of the creditors of Tom Riccardi, actor, the Labilities were said to be £280 ; assets, nil.
The Licensing Bench have notified to publicans that unless new premises are built, or the present ones enlarged and repaired, their licenses will be cancelled next year.
An inquiry has been held before the Collector of Customs, into the foundering of the schooner Policeman. Only the captain's evidence was taken. He deposed that she was insured to her full value in the South British Company, for £550. When lying at Spirit Bay he did not take steps to ascertain where the land was, or- precautions to prevent an increase of water, Tbe inquiry was adjourned.
