The Star. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 1881.

HAWERA TOWN BOARD.

In another column we publish the annual balance-sheet of the Hawera Town Board. From it we learn that £208 14s. lOd. has been expended during the year in improvements, and that there was £116 4s. lid. in the bank at the date of balancing. Consequently, out of a gross total of £441, there had been £324 either spent or available for expenditure on public works. The amount spent on extras seems large in proportion to income, and more economy could easily be effected in certain items. The charges for advertising and printing are more than usual, owing to the fact that there have been a regular succession of extraordinary elections ; no less than £11 17s. 6d. having been expended in advertising elections only between the 19th of May, 1880, and the close of May, 1881. According to

the balance-sheet, High-street seems to have absorbed the lion's share of the expenditure ; without mentioning the gravelling of footpaths, on that one street alone no less than £174 out of £208 was spent.
