HAWERA ROAD BOARD.
It is stated that Earl Beaconsneld's estate at Hughenden was heavily mortgaged, and that he died poor. For his fotest work, " Endymion," Messrs. Longmans and Go. forwarded a cheque for £12,000 to the deceased nobleman. It was the same publishing firm that sent Lord Macaulay a cheque for £20,000 for his " History of England."
