WELLINGTON,. Last Night.

The Queen's Birthday was fine bat bleak, and was observed .as a close holiday. The Governor's levee was thinly attended. Chief Justice Prendergast was knighted, and Sir Dillon Bell madeK.C.M.G. " .

The Industrial Exhibition opened by the Governor yesterday,- was largely visited by the people lost night. -

The mail steamer left San Francisco on the Bth inst.

A large and influential meeting . of gentlemen • interested in the formation of a New Zealand Institute of Surveyors was held on Saturday. The Bill to be presented to Parliament was amended. The following were elected officers and council for the first year :— Charles D. Irvine, President ; J. R. Browne, Christchurch, J. Rochfort, Nelson, and R. A. Young, Westport, Vice-Presidente for the Middle Island ; and Messrs. Humphries, Taranaki, H. Skeet, Hawera, and J. Gwynneth, Auckland, for the North Island Council. J. Rochfort, Nelson, C. D. Irvine, Wellington, W. H. Clarke, Auckland, J. B. Browne, Christchurcb, H. A. Gordon, Greymouth, T. D. Triphook, Eawakawa, H. Skeet, Hawera, T. Humphries, Taranaki, R. A.. Young, Westport, D. A. McLeod, Oamaru, £. H. Beere, Wellington, W. D. Campbell, Auckland, J. Gwynneth, Waikato, G. F. Allen, Wanganui, G. A. Beere, Marl* borough, R. Mangles King, Wellington, J. Burton, Wairarapa, F. M. Marchant, South Canterbury, P. C. Cheal, Auckland, and H. C. Field, Wanganui, to hold office until the passing of a Bill to be called " The New Zealand Institute of Surveyors' Act, 1881." Messrs. Browne, Irvine, and E. H. Beere were constituted a Committee Council to secure the passing of the BUI.

For some days past the Wellington police have taken active steps with the view to the identification of the two men — Fred Seymour alias William. Smith, and James Grant alias J. Harnett— who committed several highway robberies in the neighborhood of Edinburgh, Scotland. Seymour shot himself dead*when arrested, but Grant was captured. When it was understood that both men had come to New Zealand, photos of these desperadoes were sent here by the Home police to be identified. The police have been successful in their efforts as to identification, one being recognised as third officer of the ship Fernglen, which was here hi 1879, and the other to be a seaman in the same vessel. After they had left the vessel they joined the constabulary on the Waimate Plains. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.

An eight-roomed house on the Northeast Belt,, owned by Mr. Stoddart, has been burned. The insurance is not known.

The cathedral spire, which rises to a height of 202 feet, was completed on Saturday. At the annual meeting of the Sydenham Building Society it transpired that defalcations of W; W. Chartenflafce'm&ft ager, who had absconded 1 to England, amounted to £2500, of which £1200 will be recovered.

DUNEDIN, Last Night.

The weather was glorious. Edward Tewley, sixteen years of age, fell down a lift at Sargood and Company's warehouse and fractured his -skull. He died instantly. The Boslyn Tramway Company by a large majority of votes refused to allow cars to run on Sundays. AUCKLAND, Last Night. ' Several Mormon converts leave by the mail steamer.

The passengers by tbe Botomahana report seeing what they believe to be a comet in the southwest, ten degrees above the horizon, about eight o'clock last night. A letter supposed to be stolen from the City Council tender box was found unopened in the rubbish basket, and is supposed to have dropped out of the box.
