NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. The barque Adamant is expected to get dear by Monday, and will sail for Lyttelton about Tuesday. WELLINGTON, Last Night. At a meeting of tbe Cabinet, held yesterday, the case of the Inspector of Lunatic Asylums underwent careful considera- . tion. DtJNEDIN, Last Night. r The Coroner's decision, in reference to the cause of the wreck of the Tararua, will probably be given next Friday. Peter Hodgekirk, expressman, committed suicide, by hanging, on Tuesday night. On his body a letter was found stating the cause of the act— separation from his wife and family. Last week his wife 'sued him for maintenance. The letter added, "I suppose the jury will bring in insanity, but I am not insane, and never was." ■ No further applications for relief have been made to the Tararua Belief Committee. Captain Garrard being an excellent swimmer, surprise has been expressed that he did not swim ashore. It now transpires, from tße position of the body when found, that he evidently did try to swim, but that he was caught in the keel. Mr. Frahok, the patentee of the totalisator, is having writs served on all the Jockey Club Committees here for using his invention. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Mr. T. Anderson, jun., has received, as stakeholder, a deposit of £25 from Hearn, of Wellington, for the sculling match with White, of Mercury Bay. The Government has notified to the Hamilton Borough Council that unless they took up the bridge debentures faster the Comptroller of Revenue would levy a rate.. The council agreed to expend £200 in hand to liquidate a portion of their liabilities. Mr. John Smith's racing stud was offered for sale, but withdrawn at the reserve. The Stud Company offered £500 for Maid of Honor. Letters from Melbourne state that the formation of a company to work the sulphur deposits in New Zealand, and for the erection of aoid works at Auckland, is progressing satisfactorily. Edwin Charles Shepperd, of Whatawhata, settler, charged with cruelly illtreating three children from the Home for Neglected and Destitute Children, has been committed for trial for alleged perjury during the hearing of the case. . Bail •was allowed, himself in £400, and two sureties of £250 each. The former suretiM Were disqualified, being related to the prisoner, who has been locked up until other sureties are found.
