{ebb united press association.) . AUCKLAND, Last Night. , . , Thomas ' Simms) the sailor, has' been .CQmmitted on a, charge of attempted znurder on his sweetheart, Annie Carnne, at Kiverhead. James Henly, carpenter, fell down a ladder whilst working at .the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. His death was accidental, and no blame was attached to any one. Such was the verdict of the jury. A conference was held between the Board of Education and a deputation . Irom, the late meeting of Bchool committee& y of the province respecting an alteration in the regulations, to prevent discord - between -the board and school committees for the future. Garrad, the '• laborer agitator, has again broken out, and- commences a fresh crusade on: the Chinese and the labor questions. The inorease in the population in the Waikato, Raglan, and Kawhia, since the previous census, is 26 per cent. ASHBURTON, Last Night. A fire broke out this morning, and Watts' Temperance Hotel was burnt to the ground in a short tune. The fire also caught Baker and Brown's coach factory, which was also d,e^troyed. One lodger in the boardirig-hbuse, who was extricated with difficulty, was much cut and burnt. Mr. and Mrs. Watts were absent at the tune. Their two children were rescued by" the lodgers. Insurances — On the hotel (Baker and Browns owners) : South British, JE800; Standard, £200. Furniture: Union, J2OO. The factory was insured for £850 in the South British. The stook was uninsured. The origin of the fire is unknown. Baker and Browns are heavy losers. CHAELESTON, Last Night. The Government dam was carried away last night, taking away with it Gregory and Bonner's dam, also everything below it, and very nearly with loss of life. The loss is considerable, and will cause almost a total cessation of mining in the district.
