BOUNTY SEPARATION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — Hi aring that a petition is going the rounds for signature, having for its object separation from the Patea County, I would most respectfully suggest that the ratepayers would consider well before signing it, as they might hereafter regret any precipitate steps taken now without due consideration, as things have materially changed since separation was first mooted. The Hawera Biding, including the "Waimate Plains and Ngaire district, is larger in extent and more densely populated than the southern portion of the county. Therefore, I consider that we are entitled to a larger representation, and a more central place for the council to meet as at present constituted. This, I think, ought to meet the requirements of the ratepayers. There is another, and a very strong reason, for opposing separation at the next meeting of the House — the question of redistribution of seats will most likely be considered, and I have every reason to believe that in this county we shall be entitled to a member on a purely population basis; but supposing we go in for separation and get it, what will most likely follow ? When the redistribution of seats takes place, instead of having a member, this portion will be tacked on to Taranaki, and the Patea portion to Wanganui. Is this what we have been struggling for for years ? I would most strongly appeal to the ratepayers' patriotism to resist it. And I would again most respectfully suggest to ratepayers to read the petition, and weigh well the reasons given, before signing.— I am, &c, r. McGuire.
