At the Land Board meeting to-day, a memorial from a number of settlers in the Stratford district was read, drawing attention to the Stratford-Opunake road, and stating that dining the winter months, the road would be impassable, owing to the want of culverts in creeks. The chairman was directed to acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and to state that the Board had no power to act in the matter. The transfer of sections No. 30 and 31, block IX., Ngaire, from M. Collins to J. Gough, was acceded to. The application of Neal McQueen, to purchase section 129, block 11., Ngaire, containing 113 acres, was allowed. [per united press association.! WELLINGTON, Last Night. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, a number of women of ill-fame were summoned under the Vagrant Act. In adjourning the cases for a week. His Worship said, there is no doubt that prostitution per se is not unlawful, but if accompanied by disorder, or indecent exposure, or anything that grossly shocks the public mind, then it is unlawful. The defendants were bound over to appear for sentence this day week. The Government intend to prosecute every person connected with the Mount View Asylum, against whom a prima facie case is disclosed in the evidence given before the Eoyal Commission. The Crown solicitors have the evidence under their consideration. A carter named William Peckham was killed at Kaiwarra last night through the accidental capsizing of his cart into the Kaiwarra stream. He leaves a wife and large family. An inquest will be held. AUCKLAND, Last Night. This morning, Messrs. Jagger and Parker's saw-mill, on the reclaimed land,- at Freeman's Bay, was destroyed by fire. This morning the saw-mill had a large stock of timber in it, all of which was destroyed. The mill and stock were worth nearly £3000. The fire was first seen in the centre of the building, near the steam engine. Eecentiy the premises and machinery were sold for £1500, and additions have since been made. The only insurance on it is one of £400, in the National office, to cover a mortgage. A miner named Burke, from Coromandel, has committed suicide by putting a rifle in his mouth and blowing his head nearly off. He was insane. Mr. Rees, solicitor, has laid another information against Wickham, of the Free Lance, for a leading article in Saturday's issue, as being offensive, and published for the purpose of annoyance and provocation. Wickham is summoned for Wednesday. The article objected to concludes thus: — "We shall fight for our right to make comments on the actions of Messrs. Rees and Hurst, when they affect public interests, with our last shirt and our last shilling." A boat containing four men was capsized yesterday in Brisk Bay, on the North Shore, being struck by a squall. Henry Drumrnond and Daniel O'SuUivan were drowned. Drummond leaves a wife and three children. O'Sullivan was recently married. James Allen and Joseph D xey, single men, saved themselves by swimming ashore. The police have searched for the bodies, but unsuccessfully. GREYMOUTH, Last Night. Mrs. McGahey has petitioned the Government for means to enable her to leave Reefton. Since the fatal occurrence she has been stopping at the police camp. Up to the present the police have been unable to find any trace of the gun with which the murder is. supposed to have been committed. The money found in McGahey's possession is satisfactorily accounted for. ASHBURTON, Last Night. A man named Stalker dropped dead at the sale yesterday afternoon. The "supposed cause of death was apoplexy. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The inquest on the body of Rice Foulkes was held yesterday. A verdict of suicide, whilst in a state of temporary insanity, was returned. The foreman of the jury thought the police should have obtained evidence as to Foulkes^financrßl position, as some one might possibly "have robbed him. He was known, .however, to be in financial difficulties, anjLfrom the position in which the body was found, with the gun tied to the left foot, there can be little doubt of its being a case of suicide.!
