TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

RESIGNATION OF MR. BARLEYMAN.

[Specially Telegraphed to Star.]

(prom our own correspondent.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night.

The Land Board met to-day. An extension of one month was granted to W. O'Brien to pay the instalment due on section 4, block 111., Ngaire.

Jas. Murphy, section 25, block X., Ngaire, containing 253 acres, and W. P. Taylor, section 38, block VI., Ngaire, containing 30 acres, had their sections forfeited, through not complying with the conditions of the Act.

The Ranger reported upon the application made by the Hawera Road Board, requesting: the sanction of the Land Board re the expenditure of the deferred payment money upon the Clifford and Mangawhero roads, and recommended that the application be acceded to. — The application was referred back to the Road Board for a statement of the specific amount required for each road. Mr. Barleyman asked the Chief Commissioner to inform him whether there was any rule laid down as to the nnmber of allotments that could be included in one Crown grant, or in one receipt of the Receiver of Land Revenue, and what

course was pursue'l in the Nc-w Plymouth office in this respect ? The Chief Commissioner said that he had always made it a rule to consult the wishes of purchasers of land. As a general rale, he included as many allotments as possible in one grant, but occasionally the purchasers desired that separate grants should be issued for each allotment.

Mr. Ivcliy said the course pursued by the Chief Commissioner was that adopted in all the Land Offices throughout the colony, so far as his experience went. Mr. Barleyman replied that a totally different system was being pursued in the West Coast Land District, where the object seemed to be to get as much as possible in the shape of fees out of every purchaser of Government land. Thus, for town sections in Manaia, purchasers of contiguous sections had two receipts, involving additional fees in every transfer. Mr. Barleyman announced that he considered it advisable to retire from the Board, as the business coming before it relating to persons residing in his neighborhood, since the constitution of the West Coast District, presented little difficulty; so he had tendered to the Governor his resignation.

Some complimentary speeches were then made, and the Board adjourned.
