Wellington, Last Night.

Dr. Skae, Inspector of Lunatic Asylums, and Mr. Whitelaw, Superintendent of the Wellington Lunatic Asylum, were examined before the Asylum Commissioners to-day, their evidence being in defence of the management of the institution.

The resignation of Mr. E. W. Mills as a Justice of the Peace has been accepted.

Auckland, Last Night.

A gum-digger named Tom Sougher has been killed at the Great Barrier by an old bnrnt kauri tree falling across his tent. His mate, who was lying behind him, narrowly escaped.

At the Auckland Grammar School enquiry, Messrs. Lusk, Tomlinson, A. Robertson, and Thomson, were crossexamined to-day severely. The proceedings were very lively, and amenities were freely interchanged between the witnesses and the head-master, and also between the members of the Board.

Invercargill, Last Night.

The Governor and suite arrived by special train at four o'clock yesterday, and were met at the railway station by a large crowd, the Volunteers forming a guard of honor. On advancing from the station, Sir Arthur Gordon was presented with addresses from the Invercargill Borough Council and the Southland County Council, and after he had replied thereto, three hearty cheers were given for him.
