MR. FOY'S APPOINTMENT.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Sic, — Fearing that some of the readers of your paper, who are ratepayers, may, in perusing the proceedings of the Town Board on Monday evening last, believe the statement made by one of the members, to the effect that I hold an appointment under the Board as their engineer with a yearly salaiy, I beg to state that such is not the case. Any ratepayer who wishes to know the nature of the work that I have been engaged upon for some time past, in connection with the Board, can easily be informed thereof by reference to the minutes of the meeting held on the 13th, and published in the Stab on the 15th December last.
I am very anxious to set myself aright with the majority of the ratepayers of the township, as I fear some of them have been misled as to the nature and importance of the work in question ; and it was my intention to have trespassed somewhat further upon both your time and space at the present for this purpose, but as I have reason to believe, that I can manage to have my plans and report sent in before the next meeting of the Board, I shall forego my intention for this reason.
However, any person who may wish fco see the difference between the formation of a street where the workmen have been guided by a reliable section, and the work properly pegged out, had better take a walk to the north end of Princes street, and compare it with those done on the north end of Regent street some time ago, and which cost — well, I feel ashamed to mention the amount. But in this I feel myself justified, and have consequently no scruples in stating that the earth will have to be moved from where it has been deposited in Regent street, and conveyed back to the place from which it was taken in High street, if you want to drain properly either of these streets, as the sections of them unmistakably show, for water will only flow naturally in one direction, unless made to do so by artificial means.
I wish the ratepayers of the township to understand that my connection with the Board did not arise from any solicitations on my part for work, but that it was the result of a deputation appointed at a meeting of the Board to wait upon me relative to some engineering work urgently required at the time. — I am, &c., Thomas M. Pot. Hawera, 10th March, 1881.
